Pentax 645N Kit
Our Pentax 645N kits include everything you need to start shooting:
- Auto Exposure (AE) prism
- 120 film insert
- Takumar SMC 105mm f/2.4 lens
- Neck strap
The Pentax 645 is a medium format, single-lens reflex (SLR) camera that produces a 6cm x 4.5cm negative. It takes standard 120 roll film (we don't offer 220 inserts), and produces 16 images per roll. Because it's an SLR camera you can change lenses on the fly, even when film is loaded.
The camera has a built-in light meter, though most serious film shooters use a dedicated handheld meter so that they have the option for incident as well as reflected readings. The camera allows you to meter in both matrix and spot metering, via a switch on the back of the body.
Because our Pentax 645N kit is using a lens adapter and lenses originally designed for the Pentax 67, this kit does not have auto focus, but is instead only a manual focus camera. The lenses that Pentax offered for the 645N are fine, but we feel the lenses for the 67 are superior, which is why we offer it in this configuration.
Another feature unique to the Pentax is absence of removable film backs. The thought is that Pentax did this to save cost, so the camera could b sold at a lower price (which is also why the prism is also no removable, also unlike the others). In addition, the Pentax has 120 or 220 specific film inserts; you cannot simply change the pressure plate and use the same insert for both sizes.
A welcome feature of the Pentax 645N is that it takes regular AA batteries. What’s more, whereas rechargeable batteries are bad for the Contax and the H1/GX, the Pentax is happy to take rechargeable AA batteries.
